Teaching focus areas

I've taught a wide range of classes at Iowa State University at both the master's and doctoral (primarily in the Ed.D. program) levels. Some of my recent courses taught are:
  • RES EV 580: Introduction to Qualitative Research (in-class and online)
  • HG ED 561: College Teaching
  • HG ED 593: Higher Education Workshop (topics may vary)
  • HG ED 573: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Student Affairs (online)
  • EL PS 651X: Foundations of P-20 Schooling
  • HG ED 666: Academic Issues and Cultures

From 2009-2016, I also periodically taught U.S. survey courses at Northeast Lakeview College in the San Antonio area. In all, I accumulated about 5 years experience as a community college adjunct, and this time was hugely influential on my outlook as a teacher and researcher.

Some works that I've found to be enormously helpful for me as a teacher:
  • Virtually any book/resource by Mike Rose
  • bell hooks's teaching Teaching to transgress: Education as the practice of freedom
