My research agenda
I have developed a research agenda around three strands:
Latinx students
I am particularly interested in how students enter and move through the community college sector in particular. Per Excelencia in Education (2019), public 2-year institutions enroll approximately 41% of Latinx students around the United States. Put another way more Latinx students pursue their postsecondary education in this sector than any other, making it a significantly important arena for understanding how to increase Latinx participation and attainment in higher education. Related to this, I am interested in Latinx students' participation in developmental education.
College Faculty
I am interested in the professional development of college faculty, including the graduate degrees they pursue and other activities they engage in related to teaching and learning. I also recently conducted a survey of community college faculty nationally to learn more about how they understand and enact culturally relevant pedagogy in their classrooms.
Hispanic-Serving and Hispanic-Enrolling Institutions
Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are a growing set of Minority-Serving Institutions in the United States (see https://www.edexcelencia.org/research/publications/hispanic-serving-institutions-hsis-2018-19). Considering I live in a part of the country that may not qualify for formal HSI status (25% or more of students who identify as Latinx) or the informal "Emerging HSI" status, I am also interested in understanding institutions that serve their Latinx students effectively.
More information on the way I have developed these strands into research studies can be found on the Publications and Presentations pages.
